Tom Warren for The Verge:

In an internal memo, obtained and verified by The Verge, Capossela explains that “data tells us these stunts have limited positive impact and can actually result in unwanted news cycles.” He encourages all teams inside Microsoft not to do any public-facing April Fools’ Day stunts.

I hope more companies adopt this mindset. I find April 1st to be one of the worst days of the year because of the dumb, annoying things Google, Microsoft, and others do for fun that always seem to blow up in their faces.
